How do kids convert measurements in 5th grade?

Kids use two-column tables to convert between units in the same system, like feet and inches or meters and centimeters. The table shows the pattern (1 foot = 12 inches, 2 feet = 24 inches) so they can see when to multiply and when to divide.

A two-column table of feet and inches: 1 foot is 12 inches, 2 feet is 24, 3 feet is 36, 4 feet is 48, and 5 feet is 60.

How you probably learned it

You probably memorized conversion facts and a rule like "big to small, multiply".

How your kid is learning it

Your kid builds the table first, then spots the pattern. The rule still holds: going from a bigger unit to a smaller one gives you more units, so you multiply.

Metric is place value

Metric units are built on powers of 10, which 5th graders are learning at the same time. 3.5 meters is 350 centimeters: multiply by 100, and every digit moves two places.

Multi-step problems

A 2-meter board cut into 25-centimeter pieces? Convert first so the units match (200 centimeters), then divide: 200 ÷ 25 = 8 pieces.
