Why is a fraction the same as division?

In 5th grade, kids learn that a fraction is a division problem: 3/4 means 3 ÷ 4. If 3 pizzas are shared equally by 4 people, each person gets 3/4 of a pizza.

Three pizzas, each cut into fourths, with one fourth of each pizza shaded to show one friend's share: 3/4 of a pizza.

How you probably learned it

You probably learned fractions and division as separate topics, with "the fraction bar means divide" as a rule to memorize.

How your kid is learning it

Your kid learns it through sharing. Cut each of the 3 pizzas into 4 slices. Each person takes one slice from each pizza: 3 slices, each a fourth. That is 3/4.

Answers that aren't whole numbers

This idea lets kids finish division problems that don't come out even. 5 brownies shared by 2 kids is 5 ÷ 2 = 5/2, or 2 1/2 brownies each. No remainder needed.

Which number goes on top?

The amount being shared goes on top. The number of people sharing goes on the bottom. 4 pounds of trail mix shared by 6 friends is 4/6 (or 2/3) of a pound each.
